Stage 3 — Avatar Sheet
Brand: St. Peter's Basilica Prayer Placement (v1) | Audience: US + Canada, women 40+, Catholic / devotional | Written: 2026-09-14
Upstream: Stage 2 (02-market-research.md) — the LAB profile in its Section 2, the Life Force ranking in 3.1, the twenty hesitations in Section 8, and the eight unsupported claims in Section 10.
Evidence base: evidence/2026-09-14/ — reddit-voc.md, reviews.md, social-organic.md, _summary.md.
Citation rule: every quoted line below is verbatim from the evidence pack, with file, source URL and date. Anything written in her register that is not a real quote is marked (synthesis, not quoted VOC). Where a section rests on inference rather than evidence, the section says so in one line rather than papering over it.
This is a dossier on one woman. She is a composite, but she is a specific composite — a single consistent person, not a demographic average. Every detail below is either evidenced or is a deliberate, stated inference built on evidence.
1. Who She Is
Her name is Kathleen Doyle. Everyone calls her Kathy except her mother, who has called her Kathleen for sixty-one years and still does, on the days she knows who Kathy is.
She lives in Parma Heights, Ohio, in the brick ranch she and Denny bought in 1991 and have never left. The kitchen linoleum is original. There is a palm frond from last Passion Sunday tucked behind the crucifix over the back door, dry and curling, and the one from the year before is still behind it because she has never once been able to bring herself to throw one away.
She is sixty-one. She works twenty-eight hours a week at the front desk of an orthodontics practice off Pearl Road — scheduling, insurance pre-auths, calling parents about balances. She took the job in 2019 when Denny's back went and the HVAC work dried up. He is sixty-four, semi-retired in the way men are semi-retired when the retirement was not their idea, and he is on disability that does not cover what it needs to cover. Household income is around fifty-eight thousand. She knows the number to the dollar, because she is the one who does the numbers.
There are three people she prays for by name, every day, in a fixed order.
Her mother, Rosemary, 86. Congestive heart failure and the beginning of dementia, in a memory-care wing in Strongsville that costs more per month than Kathy's take-home. Kathy drives out Tuesdays and Saturdays. Twenty-two minutes each way, and she says a decade of the rosary on Ridge Road on the way there because she cannot pray in the room — in the room she is busy being cheerful.
Her son, Michael, 29. He drinks. Nobody in the family uses the other word. He lives in Lakewood, he answers about one text in four, and the last time he came for Sunday dinner he left before dessert and she stood at the storm door and watched him get into his car and did not know whether to be relieved or gutted. She has made a novena to St. Jude — patron of impossible causes — four times for Michael. The evidence's own word for this category of prayer is impossible (social-organic.md, "Novena for Impossible Requests" / "patron saint of impossible causes").
Her husband, Denny. For the back, for the mood, for whatever it is that has gone quiet in him. She does not describe this one out loud to anyone.
Her daughter Erin, 34, is in Columbus, married, fine. Erin calls on Sundays. Erin is the one Kathy does not have to pray for, and Kathy has noticed, with some shame, that she therefore thinks about Erin least.
Her parish is St. Charles Borromeo on Ridge Road. She has been registered there since 1991. She goes to the 10:30, or the Saturday vigil when Rosemary's care schedule eats Sunday morning. She was a lector for eleven years and stopped in 2021 because standing that long hurt and because the new pastor rotated the schedule in a way that felt, to her, like being let go. She still puts an envelope in. She is not angry at the Church. She is something more like tired of it, in the specific way a long marriage gets tired — she is not leaving, and she has stopped expecting to be looked after.
She once asked about having a Mass said for her father's anniversary and was told what the customary offering was, and she gave it, and she has never fully stopped turning it over. That exact discomfort is the most-documented feeling in the pack:
"I accept the practice, and I've given Mass stipends plenty of times, but intellectually, I too have a hard time understanding how it's different from simony, especially when you feel like you're obligated to give something." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/hkrrzq/anybody_else_uncomfortable_with_mass_stipends/ — 2020-07-03
Her phone is an iPhone 11 that Erin handed down in 2023. The text size is cranked up two notches. The screen is at full brightness. She has 212 unread emails and zero unread texts. Facebook is 60% of her screen time — parish page, two prayer groups, a Parma Heights community group, and her cousins in Youngstown. She shares far more than she posts; the pack shows this shape exactly, in a prayer video with 336,703 shares against 101,030 comments (social-organic.md, @natashajonesfx). She sends things to Erin. She sends things to her sister Peg. She sends almost nothing to Michael, because she is afraid of what he would read into it.
Her day. Up at 5:40 without an alarm. Coffee in the recliner in the dark with the phone. Work 8:15 to 2:30. Strongsville on Tuesdays. Grocery, dinner at six, the news she does not really watch, and then the second phone window — nine to about eleven, in bed, with Denny already asleep. That second window is where she reads long things. It is where a well-written 300-word ad actually gets read. Stage 2 is explicit that this audience reads long copy and that the category's long-runners are long-copy ads.
Her prayer list is a spiral notebook in the drawer under the phone charger, and on its current page there are eleven names, and four of them are people she barely knows — a coworker's husband, a woman from the parish whose scan is Thursday. She keeps other people's intentions. This is not a character flourish; it is the single best-documented behaviour in the evidence pack. Dozens of strangers hand their intentions to a woman going on pilgrimage, and she carries them:
"Ladies I have been reading all of these and praying for them along our pilgrimage... I am carrying all of these prayers with me. God have Mercy on us all." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/CatholicWomen/comments/1lwcv1b/pilgrimage_how_can_i_pray_for_you/ — 2025-07-12
What she is not. She is not stupid, not gullible, and not naive about money. She has never been to Europe. She has been praying the same three prayers for between four and eleven years, depending on the prayer, and none of them has been answered, and she has not stopped, and the not-stopping is who she understands herself to be.
That last sentence is the whole avatar. Everything downstream is a footnote to it.
2. Demographics & Situation
| Field | Kathy |
|---|---|
| Age band | 61. Buying core is 45–70; centre of gravity older than "40+" (Stage 2 §1.1 — self-identified "elderly like me" commenter, and "boomers or not so tech literate people") |
| Household income | ~$58,000, two earners, one on disability. Not affluent. The closest-documented real buyer in the pack is "elderly, physically disabled, and living off of social security" |
| Geography | US + Canada, Catholic-dense metro and near-rural belts — Ohio, Texas, Florida, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg. The US/CA split is unresolved by the evidence |
| Language | English. No Spanish-language material exists in the pack at all. Hispanic-Catholic segment is unresearched, not covered |
| Education | High school plus some college or an associate's. Reads carefully; calculates precisely. Not academically credentialled, and it does not matter — she does arithmetic on price to the dollar ("for an extra $7 you can cover delivery too!") |
| Household | Husband present, two adult children out of the house, one ageing parent in care. At least one dependent crisis live at any given time |
| Caretaker position | All four Stage 2 shapes converge on her: daughter of a declining parent, mother of an unreachable adult child, wife of a man who is ill and out of work. She prays for others; almost never for herself |
| Church attendance | Weekly, with gaps caused by caregiving, not by doubt. Registered parishioner, envelope-giver, ex-lector. Sits in Stage 2's "devout but faith-shaken" band — the largest and most reachable segment |
| Institutional trust | Belief intact, intermediary trust eroding. She still believes; she no longer assumes the parish is on her side about money |
| Primary device | Hand-me-down iPhone, large text, full brightness, one thumb |
| Primary platform | Facebook first, Instagram second, TikTok consumed but not posted to. She forwards rather than posts |
| Content format she actually watches | Silent B-roll with on-screen text. Two St. Peter's videos with transcript: null pulled 2.24M and 3.28M views on caption text alone |
| Phone windows | ~5:40–6:30am in the recliner; ~9:00–11:00pm in bed. The night window is where long copy gets read |
| Media diet | Parish Facebook page, two prayer groups, devotional apps (Hallow is the category's gold standard at 4.9/376K), prayer-recitation short video, Vatican and pilgrimage B-roll |
| Payment behaviour | Debit card, checks the statement, recognises every line. A billing descriptor she does not recognise reads as fraud, not as a processor quirk |
| Prior category exposure | Has almost certainly seen a Lourdes or Holy Land prayer ad in her feed already. May well have googled "is this a scam" about one |
3. Complete LAB Profile Breakdown
Every pattern from Stage 2 §2, carried forward with its percentage, converted from description into a directive. Percentages are for this avatar in this buying decision, not population norms.
Direction — Away From 70% / Toward 30%
Directive. Open on the pain and stay in it for at least the first third. Resolve into a small concrete Toward, never a large one. Write "so you never have to wonder where it went"; never write "transform your prayer life" or "the breakthrough you've been waiting for." Her Toward state is relief from uncertainty, not gain.
Source — External 55% / Internal 45%
Directive. Give her both halves or you get neither. Write third-party-checkable surfaces (real named testimonials once they exist, a live placement ticker, a refund policy she can read before buying) and a personal-judgment close. Write "read it, and decide for yourself whether this is right for you"; never write "thousands of women agree" as the closing argument. A testimonial-only proof strategy underperforms at this near-even split.
Reason Filter — Procedures 75% / Options 25%
Directive. Present one path in numbered order, every time. Write "Step 1 / Step 2 / Step 3"; never write "choose the option that's right for you." Frame bumps and OTOs as the next step in the sequence, never as alternatives on a menu. Name the procedure — a novena person attaches to a named rite far harder than to a described one.
Level — Reactive 65% / Proactive 35%
Directive. Write permission, not initiative. Write "there is one more step of faith you can take" and "you can finally set it down"; never write "take charge," "make it happen," or "don't wait." Urgency comes from her situation — the surgery is Thursday, the anniversary is the 14th — never from a countdown timer.
Scope — Specific 60% / General 40%
Directive. General on the hook, Specific in every line after it. Open on a wordless feeling; then hand her named physical acts and hard numbers. Write "printed, carried in a breast pocket, placed on the ledge, photographed, emailed inside 3 days"; never write "handled with reverence and care." Every claim that can carry a number must carry one.
Convincer Channel — See 55% / Read 20% / Hear 15% / Do 10%
Directive. The photo is the argument, not the deliverable. Show the artefact before you explain the mechanism. Write "you'll see her name"; never lead with "our process." Make the proof look individual and dated — the accusation "that image is generated" is already live and public in this exact category. Serve Read with a long FAQ and long primary text. Serve the 15% Hear with the audio OTO — it is the channel the photograph cannot reach, not a bolt-on. Ignore Do: there is nothing to try.
Convincer Mode — Number of Times 40% / Period of Time 30% / Consistent 20% / Automatic 10%
Directive. Assume she does not buy on first exposure and budget for retargeting as a requirement, not an optimisation. The 3-day promise is the single most important lever in the offer, because it converts a Period-of-Time doubt into a testable event fast. Serve the 20% Consistent with the monthly membership framed as continuing proof. Serve the 10% Automatic — acute grief and crisis collapse the window to hours — with a path that does not require deliberation.
Relationship — Matching 60% / Mismatching 40%
Directive. Match on the ritual; mismatch-proof the commerce. Write "this is what pilgrims have always done." Then make every number identical on every surface — page, checkout, email, receipt, descriptor. A 40% Mismatcher share means an arithmetic inconsistency inside an honesty claim is not untidiness; it is precisely what she is scanning for.
Time — Through Time 60% / In Time 40%; Past 40% / Present 35% / Future 25%
Directive. Anchor authority in the past — centuries, the tomb, the unbroken practice. Anchor the promise in the near present — 3 days, this week, by Thursday. Stay out of the future tense. Write "your prayer has waited long enough"; never write "your prayer will be answered" or any sentence whose verb points forward. Future tense is where the category's outcome-selling trap lives and where her disappointment lives.
Rule Structure — External Rules 55% / My Rules 40% / No Rules 5%
Directive. Answer the simony objection theologically, never legally. Write the category-boundary argument: this is a fee for printing, carrying, placing and photography; this is not a Mass intention; we are not the church. Write "if you want a Mass offered, the right place is your own parish" — deferring to the authority she respects is what buys permission for what this is not. Never argue with her scripture. Then serve the 40% My Rules with an explicit hand-off of the decision to her.
Relationship to Change — Evolution 85% / Revolution 15%
Directive. Position every element as continuous with what she already does. Write "the same way a friend might carry a prayer note for you on a pilgrimage, if Rome were in driving distance." Never write "breakthrough," "revolutionary," "a new way to pray," or "reinventing" anything. Those words are category-fatal here.
Stress Response — Chunk Down 65% / Chunk Up 35%
Directive. When she is worried, get more specific, not warmer. Write "Order 41-2207, placed Tuesday 3:14pm, photographed Thursday, in your inbox by Friday"; never write "don't worry, we take great care of every prayer." Every support and delivery email carries an order id and a dated promise. Reassurance-tone generalities read as evasion to a woman who gets forensic under stress.
Adaptation Style — Sameness with Exception 65% / Sameness 25% / Difference 10%
Directive. Frame every new element as one controlled modification to a known rite. Write "your prayer renewed each month," not "a subscription." Write "your prayer spoken aloud," not "a new audio feature." Write "someone else carries it, because you can't go" — one exception, clearly bounded, everything else unchanged.
The three patterns that decide the sale
- See (55%) — she believes her eyes and almost nothing else.
- Number of Times + Period of Time (70% combined) — she will not buy on first contact and will not stay convinced without repetition.
- External Rules (55%), argued from scripture — the objection is settled by moving the transaction outside the category, not by disputing the rule.
4. Psychological Drivers Ranked
Life Force 8 — top 3
1. Care and Protection of Loved Ones. Not close to second. Every high-emotion quote in the pack is about somebody else. The highest-performing organic item found anywhere in the research, at 16.8M views, is literally "Prayer for your mom." In Kathy's life: she has eleven names in a spiral notebook and four of them belong to people she barely knows. She has never once written her own name on it. When she finally buys, the name in the photograph will be Rosemary's or Michael's, not hers. Lead with the person she is carrying, never with her own relief.
2. Freedom from Fear, Pain, and Danger. The specific fear is not illness. It is the fear that the effort went nowhere and no one registered it — "I still can't shake the feeling that a Mass won't be said for him because we didn't donate." In Kathy's life: she gave the offering for her father's anniversary Mass and never found out whether it was said. Four years later she still does not know. That unresolved not-knowing is the exact hole the photograph fills. The relief sold is certainty of placement, never certainty of outcome.
3. Survival, Enjoyment of Life, and Life Extension. Present throughout and almost always displaced onto somebody else — cancer, chemo, two months to live, a scan on Thursday. In Kathy's life: it is Rosemary's heart and Michael's liver. It is never her own blood pressure, which is also high, and which she has not mentioned to anyone. Write health angles in the second person about a third person — her, and the one she is praying for. Never "prayer for your health."
Deliberately not ranked: Social Approval, Being Superior, Sexual Companionship. There is no status signalling anywhere in this evidence. She will not tell anyone she bought this. A copy angle built on showing others would misread her badly.
Secondary Wants — top 3
1. Growth (Spiritual). She is buying a devotional practice, not a product. The adjacent category names the want exactly: "I am closer to god than I ever have been because of Hallow." In Kathy's life: she wants to be, at sixty-one, a woman whose faith is still moving rather than merely maintained. Frame the membership as a practice she keeps — "renewed each month" — never as a recurring charge.
2. Recognition of Service. Not recognition of her. Recognition that a real person did a real thing on her behalf. The most-repeated positive detail across the best-rated adjacent operator is a first name: "Had been speaking to Amanda." In Kathy's life: this is why Fr. M. works and "our team" does not. She needs the act attributed to a man with a name, described as labour, and closed with a gesture that costs him something. Write "I carry it in my breast pocket" and "I kneel for a moment — not long, long enough." Never write "our team handles each request with care."
3. Curiosity. Lower intensity, real, and the most under-used driver available. The Western Wall video converted 118K views on a single curious question — "Is it wrong to peek at the notes that people put into the Western Wall?" In Kathy's life: she genuinely does not know what happens to the papers people leave at holy places, and she would read a thousand words about the worn-away bronze foot of St. Peter. This is the cheapest available hook upgrade in the kit.
5. Pain Points with Life Force Connections
Pain 1 — Prayer fatigue: years of the same prayer, nothing moved
Driver: Freedom from Fear, Pain and Danger (#3) — specifically the fear that the effort was wasted and unwitnessed. This is not doubt about God. It is exhaustion inside continued belief, and it attacks her identity, because "the one who keeps praying" is who she is.
"I don't feel like praying anymore. I did so for my entire life, since I was a little girl... I feel abandoned by my Lord. I'm dissapointed and sometimes even angry." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/z8lxhl/god_doesnt_answer_my_prayer_for_15_years_now_cant/ — 2022-11-30
"I've prayed so much I should be ordained. She's constantly doing novenas." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1odo9ua/its_upsetting_to_hear_people_say_prayer_saved_a/ — 2025-10-22
What the offer can honestly do: not answer the prayer. End its invisibility. One place where the words stop being interior and become an object in a photograph. Note that the pain line itself is saturated in the category — the differentiation must come from what follows it.
Pain 2 — Carrying someone else's crisis with nothing left to do
Driver: Care and Protection of Loved Ones (#7) — the dominant driver in this avatar. Every practical avenue is exhausted. Prayer is what remains, and prayer feels like inaction.
"can u guys pls pray for my mom she has cancer and i don't even know if she's going to live or no and my brother is 6 years old i don't want him to grow up without a mom and dad i cry all night thinking what would i do if she dies pls pray for us" — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/1ficbah/pray_for_my_mom_she_has_cancer/ — 2024-09-16
"For my husband to be ambulatory again and for me to find a job so I can support and help care for him." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/CatholicWomen/comments/1lwcv1b/pilgrimage_how_can_i_pray_for_you/ — 2025-07-10
What the offer can honestly do: convert helplessness into a completed action with a receipt. "I did something" is the emotional product. Name the act in physical verbs, because that is how she registers ritual.
Pain 3 — Grief with nowhere to put it
Driver: Care and Protection of Loved Ones (#7), extended past death — the caretaking instinct with no living object. There is no outcome to ask for. She is looking for somewhere to stand.
"My mum wanted to light a candle for him in the Basilica at the Vatican, but when we went today there weren't any. ... Where can we do something nice like this to commemorate him, somewhere special in Rome? It would mean a lot to her." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/rome/comments/9eg2wp/where_can_my_mum_light_a_candle_for_her_dad_who/ — 2018-09-09
What the offer can honestly do: supply the place. Commercially this is the widest opening in the category — grief/memorial is Light saturation, run by exactly one small operator, untouched by the larger players.
Evidence caveat: the Reddit grief material is strong; the organic-format claim for grief content is unverified — no bereavement-term social search was run (_summary.md Gaps).
Pain 4 — The money question she has never resolved
Driver: Freedom from Fear, Pain and Danger (#3), in its moral form — fear of having done something wrong. She has paid for religious things before and it left a residue.
"It's just hard because I have no issues with making donations it's just when it's linked to something like a sacrament it basically has the feel of simony." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/hkrrzq/anybody_else_uncomfortable_with_mass_stipends/ — 2020-07-03
"Putting God's sacraments behind a paywall is wrong." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1gb2o62/my_church_is_asking_for_a_200_donation_for_my/ — 2024-10-24
What the offer can honestly do: state the fee plainly and early, and put the transaction outside the category of spiritual goods. A plainly-stated fee is more acceptable to her than a suggested donation. Concealment and euphemism are the triggers, not price.
6. Hesitations by Category
Twenty-two, written first-person as she would actually think them, each cited. Trust is the heaviest category by a wide margin, which is the correct weighting for a category whose own operators have been publicly exposed.
Time (4)
T1. "How long is this really going to take? The Lourdes woman said it took her a couple of weeks."
"I received a picture of my prayer and the candle that was lit a couple of weeks after I submitted my request" — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1nljaf5/is_this_lourdes_thing_i_keep_seeing_a_scam_or/ — 2025-09-19
T2. "Three days? For something that supposedly involves a real man walking into a real basilica in Rome? That's too fast to be true." Evidence: inference from her Specific 60% / Mismatching 40% profile (Stage 2 §2), which scans stated numbers for implausibility rather than accepting them. (No direct VOC; this is a profile-derived hesitation, flagged as such in Stage 2 as well.)
T3. "Mom's cardiology appointment is Thursday. If it doesn't come before Thursday, what was the point?" Evidence: time-bound intentions run all through the VOC — "My husband's friend has a teenage son in the hospital that is likely not going to make it. Edit: their son died, he was 19 years old." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/CatholicWomen/comments/1ff8owo/i_am_going_to_volunteer_in_lourdes_id_like_to/ — 2024-09-12. The window is sometimes days.
T4. "If I sign up for the monthly one, is that a thing I have to manage for the rest of my life?"
"No stars. It doesn't show on my apps so I can cancel. I paid an annual fee, now it charges me a fee every month." — reviews.md — https://www.trustpilot.com/review/pray.com — 2026-07-17
Capability (4)
C1. "I don't know how to write a prayer good enough to be put somewhere like that. What if it sounds stupid?" Evidence: her devotional register is highly formalised — "In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." — social-organic.md — https://www.tiktok.com/@thecatholicpilgrims/video/7672501834451455234 — 2026-08-10. Formality creates performance anxiety.
C2. "I can't write down what's actually wrong. Not for a stranger to read."
"The intentions I have are so specific that they would absolutely dox me, and I want to stay anonymous on here. May you please just pray for my intentions? God knows them." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/CatholicWomen/comments/1ff8owo/i_am_going_to_volunteer_in_lourdes_id_like_to/ — 2024-09-12. Her own word for this is unspoken — social-organic.md, @miracleshappenministries.
C3. "I'm no good with these websites. What if I type it in wrong and my mother's name comes out misspelled on the card?"
"they sent me video where there is no way to identify where the pooja was performed. Moreover they took my gotra name incorrectly..." — reviews.md — https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sri-mandir-puja-chadhava/id1637621461?see-all=reviews — undated
C4. "If something goes wrong, is there a person I can actually reach, or is it just an email that bounces?"
"I contacted the provider multiple times by email and received no response." — reviews.md — https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sri-mandir-puja-chadhava/id1637621461?see-all=reviews — undated. The inverse is the strongest positive signal in the file: "Had been speaking to Amanda who was very helpful" — reviews.md — https://www.trustpilot.com/review/directfromlourdes.com — 2026-03-06
Situational (4)
S1. "Thirty-five dollars. That's the co-pay, or that's most of a tank of gas."

S2. "Why would I pay anyone, when the shrine's own website takes intentions for nothing?"
"The fact is you can go to the official website of the Lourdes shrine and submit your prayer intentions that will be placed at the shrine for Free. To have candles lit, there is a fee. That is a separate service. No cost to submit intentions." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Catholicism/comments/1nljaf5/is_this_lourdes_thing_i_keep_seeing_a_scam_or/ — 2025-09-19 The single most commercially dangerous hesitation in this list — true, free, and one comment away.
S3. "Shouldn't this money go in the envelope at St. Charles, or to the food pantry?"
"While there are legit groups that do this, they usually offer prayers for free, along with cards, scapulars, and medals, and ask for optional donations." — reviews.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/1n1nisc/facebook_page_posing_as_a_religious_organization/ — 2025-08-27

Trust — the heaviest category (8)
R1. "Isn't paying for prayer just simony? Isn't that the actual named sin?"
"Payment in exchange for spiritual goods is the sin of simony, named after Simon Magus in the Acts of the Apostles." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAChristian/comments/1w6eq8a/is_it_a_sin_to_take_money_for_prayers/ — 2026-09-03. Near-verbatim in 6 of 15 threads.
R2. "Scripture is plain about this. Give without pay. How do they get around that?"
"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAChristian/comments/1w6eq8a/is_it_a_sin_to_take_money_for_prayers/ — 2026-09-03

Count: 22 — Time 4, Capability 4, Situational 4, Trust 10.
Deliberately absent. The evidence contains no quote of a buyer worrying that the delivered photograph itself is machine-generated. The public exposé is about testimonial images, not about the delivered artefact. R5 and R6 are the nearest real hesitations. Do not manufacture a sharper one than the evidence supports.
7. Goals & Aspirations
What she wants for the people she prays for
Small, concrete, named. Nobody in this entire evidence base asks for wealth, status or transformation. They ask for one specific person to be okay.
"For my husband to be ambulatory again and for me to find a job so I can support and help care for him." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/CatholicWomen/comments/1lwcv1b/pilgrimage_how_can_i_pray_for_you/ — 2025-07-10
For Kathy: that Rosemary is not frightened at the end. That Michael picks up. That Denny gets one good year where the pain is manageable and he is himself again. Three sentences, and she could say all three in under ten seconds, and she has never said any of them out loud to another living person in exactly those words.
What she wants for herself
She will name this last, quietly, and only if you make room for it. It is not health, money or rest. It is this: to know that all of it counted. That forty years of praying was heard by somebody, registered somewhere, and not merely emitted into a room.
(Synthesis, not quoted VOC — no quote in the pack has a woman stating her own want directly. What the pack shows instead is the shape of the absence: every single high-emotion quote is about somebody else. Her self-want is legible only as a gap. That gap is itself the evidence.)
The second thing, smaller and more admissible: to have done everything. Not to be lying awake at eighty-one thinking there was one more thing she could have tried for Michael and she did not try it.
What "it worked" looks like to her
It is important to be precise here, because the product promises placement, not outcome, and her definition of success has to be buildable inside that boundary.
- The email arrives when it said it would.
- The photograph is clearly a real place, clearly her card, her handwriting or her words, her mother's name legible.
- Something is different about the day she opens it. She looks at it more than once. She puts it somewhere — the refrigerator, or the frame on the dresser next to her father.
- She shows it to one person. Probably Peg. Possibly nobody.
- Months later, when it is bad, she opens the file again and looks at it, and it still does what it did the first time.
What "it worked" is not: Rosemary getting better. Michael calling. The offer must never be allowed to imply that it is, and she will not require it to — her own theology already says prayer is not a vending machine, and she will say so before you do. Agreeing with her about that is what buys the sale. Arguing past it loses her instantly.
8. Emotional Drivers
Being witnessed. The deepest one. Stage 2's central finding is that the wound is prayer that went unwitnessed, not prayer that went unanswered. The photograph's real function is that it proves someone was there, saw it, and did the thing. "I broke down in tears. It was as if God was speaking to me and letting me know he heard me."
Doing something rather than nothing. She is in a caretaking position where every practical avenue is closed. This purchase is an act, and acts relieve helplessness in a way that feelings do not. The organic evidence is a stranger doing the act for free: "I'll light a candle for you in every church I walk into."
Guilt reduction. She is not doing enough for her mother. She did something wrong with Michael and cannot identify what. She is not at Mass as often as she was. The purchase is a small, affordable, morally clean deposit against a running debt she can never clear.
The need to have tried everything. The category's own best-performing headline is "You've Tried Everything Else… Try Prayer," and the winning primary text is "we've prayed quietly at home, cried in our car, begged God in silence... and we're still waiting. If that's you, there's one more step of faith you can take." The word doing the work there is one more. Not better. One more. (Holy Land Prayer ad copy, via Stage 2 §9 / competitor-ads.md — competitor creative, not customer voice.)
Being a good daughter, mother, wife. The role is the identity. She is not buying a photograph; she is buying evidence of her own faithfulness in three roles she suspects she is failing at. This is why the name in the photograph is the emotional payload and her own name never appears anywhere.
Reverence, and the pleasure of a beautiful thing. Underrated and real. The two St. Peter's videos in the pack pulled 2.24M and 3.28M views on silent footage alone, and the caption that carried the bigger one was: "WOW is all I could say 🥹 this place was stunning and truly just made me so emotional 😭." Part of what she is buying is simply the chance to have something that beautiful be hers for a minute.
What does not move her: status, being seen to be devout, outdoing anybody, belonging to a club, novelty. There is zero status signalling anywhere in this evidence pack.
9. Direct Client Quotes
Forty-two verbatim quotes, all from the evidence pack, in six categories. Every line carries file, source URL and date.

Her vocabulary, borrowable
claim (to accept a prayer someone else made), carry / carrying, take it with you, unspoken (a need too private to name), intention (the unit of prayer), impossible (the qualifier attached to prayers escalated to ritual level). All from social-organic.md. Do not use "lift" — it is claimed by the live Lourdes competitor.
10. Fears & Frustrations
What she would say out loud
- That she will pay and nothing will arrive, and there will be nobody to call.
- That the photograph will be generic and will not really be hers.
- That the recurring charge will not stop.
- That she cannot afford it this month.
- That the free option at the shrine makes the paid one indefensible.
What she would not say out loud
That she is being foolish. Not defrauded — foolish. The distinction matters. The public accusation in her own category is aimed squarely at her demographic: "it preys on a large portion of Catholics who are probably boomers or not so tech literate people who would easily fall for it." She has read something like that sentence, and it landed on her, not on the operator.
That she is being taken advantage of because she is desperate. The evidence contains a near-perfect portrait of this fear, from the outside: a family member describing an elderly, disabled woman on social security defending a $29–$39 prayer purchase with "and look what good it did me!" Kathy's terror is being that woman in somebody else's story.
That the prayers are not working because of something about her. This is the darkest one, and it is in the pack almost verbatim: "Why did she think she was so special to be an exception?" That sentence is not about the other woman. It is a person asking whether she has been presumptuous in expecting anything at all.
That she is running out of time with someone. Rosemary is 86. Michael is not getting better on his own. This is the fear that converts browsing into buying, and it is why the 3-day promise is load-bearing and not a logistics detail. "I cry all night thinking what would i do if she dies."
That she is angry at God, and that the anger will cost her something. "I feel abandoned by my Lord. I'm dissapointed and sometimes even angry." She reports the anger with fear attached. Copy must never inflame this and must never name an enemy — but the offer's non-institutional, warm, personal shape quietly answers it.
That her family will find out and pity her. Lower-grade, constant. She will not put the photograph on Facebook. She may not tell Denny what it cost.
The trust risk she is uniquely positioned to detect
There may be no candles inside St. Peter's Basilica. The only first-hand account of St. Peter's in the entire evidence pack is a visitor who went looking and found none:
"My mum wanted to light a candle for him in the Basilica at the Vatican, but when we went today there weren't any." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/rome/comments/9eg2wp/where_can_my_mum_light_a_candle_for_her_dad_who/ — 2018-09-09
The current copy kit asserts "a candle is lit beside it" in six separate places. Kathy is exactly the buyer who would notice: 60% Specific, 40% Mismatching, primed by her whole category to hunt for the discrepancy, and connected to people who have made the trip. If one woman in a parish Facebook group says there are no candles in St. Peter's, the claim does not just fail — it converts the brand into the next r/Scams thread, and the brand's own honesty positioning becomes the weapon used against it.
This is a pre-launch decision, not a copy tweak. It touches the fulfilment description itself. Stage 2 flagged it; Stage 3 carries it forward unresolved.
11. Emotional Journey
Stage 1 — Trigger
What is happening. Something moved. Rosemary was admitted overnight and came home smaller. Or Michael missed Easter. Or it is the 14th, and her father has been dead nine years. She is in the recliner at 5:50am, or in bed at 10:40pm, scrolling, and a silent shot of a basilica interior goes past with four words on it.
Her internal dialogue. "Oh — that's beautiful. That's St. Peter's. Mom would have loved that. I should send it to Peg. … Wait, what is this? Somebody puts your prayer in there? People do that? I didn't know you could do that."
What she needs to hear right now. The place, the feeling, and one sentence about somebody carrying something for somebody else. Nothing about price, nothing about a process, nothing about a mechanism. General on the hook, per the Scope pattern.
What would make her leave. A promise in future tense. Any implication that this fixes anything. A face that looks generated. The word "breakthrough." A countdown timer.
Stage 2 — Consideration
What is happening. She reads the page. All of it, twice, over two or three days and probably across two devices. She googles the brand name plus "scam." She looks for Reddit. She checks whether the number on the page matches the number at checkout. She may ask Peg. She will not ask Erin, because Erin will say don't.
Her internal dialogue. "Thirty-four ninety. That's not nothing. … Is this simony? It says it isn't a Mass and they're not the church — well, that's true, that is different, that's like paying the florist. … But the shrine's own site does it free, doesn't it? Somebody said that. … Who is this Father M.? Is he real? There's no last name. … Three days. Three days is fast. Is three days too fast? … He says he kneels for a moment. Not long. Long enough. … Oh, that's — that's exactly right, that's what it's like."
What she needs to hear. In this order: the fee stated plainly as a fee for labour and materials; the boundary stated categorically ("we are not the church; if you want a Mass offered, the right place is your own parish"); the three numbered steps; the photograph shown before the mechanism is explained; the man's name and the physical description of what he does; the refund terms in plain words; consistent numbers on every surface; and a closing line that hands the decision back to her.
What would make her leave. A price that differs between two places on the page. A testimonial that looks staged. "Our team." A donation framing over a required payment. Any scarcity claim. A checkout that does not name the charge she will see on her statement.
Stage 3 — Purchase
What is happening. It is late. She is typing her mother's name into a form on a phone in a dark bedroom. She types a prayer, deletes it, types a shorter one. She sits with her thumb over the button.
Her internal dialogue. "Is that enough to say? It sounds so plain written down. … Should I put Michael in this one too, or is that greedy? … Rosemary Ann. R-o-s-e. Let me check that. Let me check that again. … Alright. Alright, Lord, I'm doing this, and if it's foolish then forgive me for being foolish, because I don't know what else to do."
What she needs to hear at the button. That there is no right way to write a prayer. That she may keep it private if she wants. That the name will be printed exactly as she typed it, shown back to her before she pays. That the charge will appear on her statement as a specific recognisable string. That she can cancel anything recurring in one click, and where. And that the date is fixed: not "within a few days" — the actual day.
What would make her leave. A forced account creation. A pre-ticked upsell. A recurring offer presented before the first purchase is confirmed. An error message she does not understand. Any moment that makes her feel not good with these websites.
Stage 4 — Post-delivery
What is happening. The email arrives Thursday morning while she is at the front desk. She does not open it there. She waits until the parking lot and opens it in the car with the engine off.
Her internal dialogue. "Oh. … Oh, that's her name. That's her actual name, in there. … That's real marble, you can see the — that's a real place. … He really did it. … Mom. Mom, you're in St. Peter's." And then, three days later, at the kitchen table: "I should do one for Michael."
What she needs to hear. Almost nothing. The photograph, the date, the place named precisely, one or two lines from Fr. M. in first person about the moment — and then silence for a beat. The second-prayer offer belongs after the silence, framed as the next step in a sequence, never as an upsell, and never inside the delivery email's first screen.
What would make her leave, even now. An upsell stacked directly on the delivery. A photograph that could be anybody's. A misspelled name — this is the unrecoverable failure, and the evidence names it exactly: "they took my gotra name incorrectly." A second purchase that silently fails; the pack shows that exact bait-and-switch shape, first order delivered, second order vanished, and calls it heartbreak.
12. Third-Party Buyer Analysis
The evidence is unambiguous: this audience buys for other people far more than for themselves. Stage 2 ranks Care and Protection of Loved Ones as the #1 Life Force driver and notes the avatar "almost never buys for herself." Treating gifting as a side flow misreads the market. It is the primary driver expressed as a separate purchase — and Stage 2 records that the gifting lane is currently unclaimed in live ad inventory.
Who buys FOR her
The adult daughter, 32–45. The most probable third-party buyer in the set. She is the one who set up her mother's phone, who handles the insurance calls, who feels the distance. She buys after a hospital scare or before an anniversary. She is more tech-fluent, more skeptical, and will check Reddit before paying — which means the trust surfaces have to satisfy her standard, not Kathy's.
The daughter arranging the ritual on the spot. Documented, first-hand, at this exact basilica: a daughter in Rome four days after her grandfather's death, trying to arrange a commemoration for her grieving mother.
"My poor mum is grieving terribly but wanted to go on our trip to Rome as planned, even though my Grampa passed away on Thursday. ... Where can we do something nice like this to commemorate him, somewhere special in Rome? It would mean a lot to her." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/rome/comments/9eg2wp/where_can_my_mum_light_a_candle_for_her_dad_who/ — 2018-09-09
The spouse or in-law paying on a relative's behalf during a health crisis. This is the documented case the spec points to, and it is extreme: a mother-in-law paid a guru $18,000 for a prayer for her husband's recovery.
"I just found out that my mother-in-law give a Hindu guru in India $18k for a prayer. An he is actually getting credit for my father-in-law's recovery. My father-in-law doesn't even know at this point." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/1b5uswz/pay_for_pray_why_am_i_so_mad/ — 2024-03-03
Two things matter in that quote. First, a family member paid for a devotional service on a relative's behalf — the pattern is real, not theoretical. Second, the recipient did not know. Third-party purchases in this category are frequently made without the beneficiary's involvement.
The sister or close friend. Peg. Buys for the anniversary, for the diagnosis, for the week after the funeral when the casseroles stop.
The family gatekeeper who blocks the purchase. Present in the same evidence, and he must be designed for:
"I'm glad my family member asked me before they gave away $28 to these scammers." — reviews.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/1n1nisc/facebook_page_posing_as_a_religious_organization/ — 2025-08-27 "I had to make it perfectly clear to my wife that if I'm in that condition I want no prayers, especially purchased ones." — reddit-voc.md — https://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/comments/1b5uswz/pay_for_pray_why_am_i_so_mad/ — 2024-03-03 The trust page is not only for the buyer. It is for the skeptical relative the buyer forwards it to.
Who she buys FOR
Almost everyone except herself. Her mother, by a wide margin — the single strongest emotional axis in the data, at 16.8M and 3.7M views on "prayer for your mom" content. Her adult child in trouble. Her husband. Her dead father, on the anniversary. And, distinctively, people she barely knows: the coworker's husband, the woman at the parish with the scan on Thursday. She already keeps other people's intentions for free. Charging her to carry one properly is not a new behaviour — it is an existing behaviour with a receipt attached.
Why third parties buy
Guilt reduction. The daughter lives three hours away and cannot be there. The purchase is what she can send when she cannot come.
Protective instinct. Watching a parent frightened, and needing to put something between them and the fear.
Frustration at watching someone suffer with nothing left to do. The same helplessness Kathy feels, one generation down and often sharper, because the younger buyer has fewer devotional outlets of her own.
Wanting to give something when nothing else helps. After a diagnosis, flowers are wrong, food is temporary, and money is insulting. This is the gap the product sits in.
The gift that isn't a thing. Her mother does not need another object. The house is already full of objects. This is a gift that takes up no shelf space and cannot be regifted, and for a woman in her eighties in a memory-care room with one dresser, that is the entire brief.
Third-party hook angles — usable opening lines
- "She's prayed for you your whole life. This is the one you can pray for her."
- "You can't be there on Thursday. You can be in the photograph she opens that morning."
- "Your mother doesn't need another thing for the shelf. Send her something with her husband's name on it, in St. Peter's."
- "After a diagnosis, flowers are wrong and food runs out. Here is what you send instead."
- "She lit candles for you for forty years. Light one back."
- "You'll never be able to fix it. You can do one thing about it, by Friday."
- "Someone in your family has been carrying this alone. Put her mother's name where she can see it."
(All seven are written for Stage 4+ testing, not lifted from VOC. Lines 1, 3 and 5 sit on the evidenced mother-axis; line 2 sits on the evidenced time-bound-intention pattern; line 4 sits on the evidenced grief lane. None promises an outcome, and none uses future tense about the prayer.)
Copy implications for third-party creative
- Lead with the relationship, not the product. The first noun in the ad is a person — your mother, your sister, the woman who raised you — not a prayer card, not a service, not St. Peter's.
- Use external-reference LAB language, because the buyer's criteria are about someone else. Write "she will see her husband's name"; never write "you'll feel better." The buyer's satisfaction is entirely vicarious and the copy must point at the recipient's experience throughout.
- "Doing something" over "buying something." Verbs, not nouns. Send her. Put his name there. Have someone carry it. Never "purchase a prayer placement package."
- Design the page so it survives being forwarded to the skeptic. The buyer will send the link to a sibling or a spouse before paying. Consistent numbers, a plainly-stated fee, the categorical boundary line, a real refund policy and a named human must all be visible without scrolling three screens.
- Never promise the recipient's reaction. "She'll cry" is an outcome claim in disguise, and this audience prosecutes outcome claims.
- The gifting flow needs its own name field and its own delivery choice — the buyer's email, or the recipient's, with a date. The $18k case shows third-party buyers sometimes act without the recipient knowing; the flow must handle both.
Inference note: the daughter-buys-for-mother and friend-buys-for-chemo-patient shapes are extrapolated from the documented cases above (the r/rome daughter, the $18k mother-in-law, the family member who checked before a $28 purchase) plus the mother-axis organic data. The evidence proves third-party buying happens and proves the mother axis is the strongest emotional lever. It does not contain a quote from a daughter describing why she bought a prayer service for her mother. Treat the specific daughter-buyer psychology as a well-founded inference, not as evidenced voice.
13. Synthesis — the eight things a copywriter must never forget about Kathy
She is not buying an answer. She is buying a witness. The wound is prayer that went unwitnessed, not prayer that went unanswered. Every asset resolves to "you will see it," never to "it will work." Get this wrong and nothing else in the kit matters.
She believes her eyes, and almost nothing else. Convincer Channel is See at 55%. The photograph is the argument, not the deliverable. Show the artefact before explaining the mechanism, and make it look individual, dated and specific — because "that image is fake" is already a live, public, searchable accusation in this exact category.
The name in the photograph is never hers. She buys for Rosemary, for Michael, for Denny, for her dead father, for a coworker's husband. Lead every piece with the person she is carrying. Her own relief is the second paragraph, never the first line.
The simony objection is theological and must be answered theologically. Near-verbatim in 6 of 15 threads, always from Matthew 10:8 or Simon Magus, never from consumer law. The only winning move is the categorical boundary — a fee for printing, carrying, placing and photographing; not a Mass; not the church — plus deferring to her parish for what this is not. Never argue with her scripture.
She is auditing you while she reads. 60% Specific, 40% Mismatching, doing arithmetic on competitor pricing in public. Every number identical on every surface — page, checkout, email, receipt, bank statement. One inconsistency inside an honesty claim does not read as sloppiness; it reads as the thing she was already looking for.
She will not buy the first time she sees you, and acute grief is the exception. Convincer Mode is 70% repetition-based. Budget for retargeting as a requirement. And keep one path fast enough for the woman whose mother is dying this week, because that woman's decision window is hours.
A first name beats an institution, every time. The single most-repeated positive detail in the best-rated adjacent operator's reviews is a support rep called Amanda. Fr. M. must be a man who does labour — carries it in a pocket, kneels, takes the photograph himself — not a brand voice. "Our team" does not do this work; a name does.
The candle claim is the brand's sharpest unresolved risk, and Kathy is the person who would catch it. The only first-hand report of St. Peter's in the entire evidence base is a visitor who went to light a candle and found none available. The copy kit asserts a lit candle in six places. She is 40% Mismatching, she is connected to people who have made the trip, and her whole category has trained her to hunt for exactly this kind of discrepancy. Resolve the fulfilment description before launch — a false concrete detail inside an honesty-positioned brand is worth more damage than any competitor can do.
Evidence gaps carried forward into Stage 4
Stated plainly, because Stage 4 inherits whatever is asserted here.
- "I'll never get to Rome" has no VOC behind it. Zero quotes anywhere in the pack of a woman lamenting that money, health or age bars her from a pilgrimage. The evidenced posture is the reverse — people who are going, offering to carry others' intentions. Build the block on someone is going; let them carry yours, or test both shapes. Do not assert the deprivation frame as researched.
- No Spanish-language material exists. The Hispanic-Catholic segment of this avatar is unresearched. Three planned Spanish ads currently sit on an English-language avatar.
- No marriage-crisis language was captured — two searches hit a rate limit and were not retried. The marriage angle is thematically plausible, not evidenced.
- Grief/memorial social format and scale are unverified. The Reddit grief evidence is strong; no bereavement-term social search was ever run.
- No verbatim organic comment text exists in the pack. Nothing in this document quotes a comment as if it were scraped.
- Kathy's self-directed want (Section 7) is synthesis. It is inferred from a consistent absence across the whole pack, not from a quote. That inference is sound, and it is still an inference.
End of Stage 3. Stage 4 inherits: the LAB directives in Section 3 as the copy rulebook, the twenty hesitations in Section 6 as the objection-handling map, the four-stage journey in Section 11 as the funnel's emotional spine, the third-party angles in Section 12 as a distinct creative lane, and the six gaps above as claims that must not be asserted without new evidence.
